一、Worth为表语形容词,后面可接宾语,其主要用法如下：
1、意为“值得”:
Her words are worth notice.她的话值得注意.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.多得不如少得,
The research work is worth it.在这项研究工作上花精力是值得的.
2、意为“可值若干”:
This precision instrument is worth 10,000yuan,这台精密仪器值一万元.
I don' t think that your watch is worth the price.我认为你的手表不值那个价格.
It is not worth a rap.(或a damn)这毫无价值.
3、意为“有价值多少的财产”:
He is worth a million dollars.他是个百万富翁.
Mr.Smith died worth millions.史密斯先生留下几百万的财产死了.
4、常接动名词:
The book is worth reading.这本书值得一读.
Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.是值得做的事就值得做好.
5、后面可接用while,one' s while,while+动名词.
Do something worth while.做点有用的事.
He will make it worth your while.他会使之不至浪费你的精力.
It isn't worth (your) while going there.你到那儿去是不值得的.
It is worth while discussing(或to discuss) the question again.这问题值得再讨论一下.
这句话与The question is worth discussing同义.但不可说It is worth discussing the question或The question is worth while discussing.
在worth while后以接动名词较普通,但在one' s while后则接不定式为普通.比较:
It is worth while seeing the film.
It is worth your while to see the film.这部电影值得一看.
二、Worthy为定语形容词,后可接它所修饰的名词,也可接用of ,或of+动名词,或不定式.
1、意为“有价值的”,“可敬的”:
She says she helps only the worthy poor.她说她仅帮助那些品格好的穷人.
Opportunities were provided by which poor but worthy students could work out all cost of living.穷苦而可造就的学生可获得机会工读,赚到全部的生活费用.
Lei Feng is the worthy son of the people.雷锋是人民的好儿子.
He is a worthy man.他是一个高尚的人.
这种用法常用于反语.如a worthy enemy不值一击的敌人,a worthy gentleman大好佬.
2、意为“值得的”、“应得的”、“相宜的”,后面常接of;
New York is quite worthy of a visit.纽约值得一游.
He is a man worthy of praise.他是一个值得称赞的人.
Li Ming is a model worker worthy of the name.李明是一个名符其实的劳动模范.
We shall prove worthy of the party's trust.我们将不辜负党对我们的信任.
3、后接of+动名词:
The event is worthy of being remembered.那事值得记忆.
The book is worthy of being read.这本书值得一读.(不可说成worthy of reading.)
注意“worthy of十动名词”与“worth+动名词”两种形式不可混淆.在worthy后面要用
被动语态的动名词,在worth后要用主动语态的动名词.比较:
The museum is worthy of being visited.
The museum is worth visiting.那博物馆值得参观.
4、后接不定式:
This is a matter worthy to be considered.这事值得考虑.
He is worthy to lead.(=to take the lead).他够资格做领导人.
John is worthy to have,place in the team.约翰是值得在该团体中获得一位置的人.
He is worthy of being respected.
