Question 3: Longman P198. A message from the university president.
In this set of materials, the reading is a message regarding to the retirement of a professor, the listening is a discussion by two students about this professor.
In the message, the president announced that Dr. Connor who has been working for the university for 50 years will retire at the end of next spring semester. It also said that she had strong commitment to her students and had published many articles and books.
In the listening passage, the students discussed about Dr. Connor. The girl said that her father was a student of this professor 30 years ago and though highly of her. Both students wanted to take the last chance to sign up for her class before she retires.
Question 4: Longman P207. The Dead Sea.
In this set of materials, the reading discusses how the Dead Sea is formed, and the listening specifically discusses why the Dead Sea is not a real sea.

The reading passage says the name Dead is due to no life in the sea because of its high salinity. Furthermore, the water is so salty because it’s landlocked with no outlet. And the high temperature in the area caused great evaporation, leaving vast amount of salt in the water.
In the listening, the professor added that not only is the Dead sea dead, but it’s not even a sea. That’s because unlike the North Sea and the Mediterranean, the Dead Sea is an enclosed body of water that doesn’t open to the ocean.
Question 5: Longman P216.
in this listening passage, the woman asked for the man’s recommendation on which professor’s cultural history class to take.
One is Dr. Abbott, with whom the man studies before. He enjoyed the classes because he didn’t have to learn all the details by heart and they were many lively discussions. However, Dr. Abbott’s exams were essay type, which the woman wasn’t a big fan of.
Another one is Dr. Becker, who is extremely detail-oriented. This bothers the woman. Nevertheless, she does like her multiple choice question exams.
In the end, the woman still couldn’t decide which one to choose, she has to consider the different factors a little more.
Question 6: Longman P223. Bank Holiday.
In this listening passage, the professor discusses the reasons and consequences of the Bank Holiday in 1933.
Unlike its name, the Bank Holiday wasn’t a joyful occasion, but the result of trouble. The whole banking system wasn’t working well in the 1920’s and went even worse after the stock market crash in 1929. by 1933, half of the banks in America closed. Drastic times calls for drastic measures. So the President issues this holiday for the government to improve the banking system.
A Bill was passed to insure the citizen deposits to protect them. And no one ever lost any money with insured banks.
The whole situation improved a great deal after the bank holiday and this had significant influence on the American history.
