Operating Conditions:
1.Obtain fully trimmed,production representative steering wheel samples.The samples must have been produced at production intent
rates and a minimum of 100 samples produced in the run.Small sample lots run at slower production speeds tend to have nonrepresentative
hardness (high density).
2.The test samples are to be conditioned at 23 +/- 3C for a minimum of two hours prior to testing.The samples must be tested at 23 +/3C.
3.Secure the test samples in a Tinius-Olsen test device,or Ford engineering approved equivalent.Use a cross-head speed of 25 +/2mm/
min,to preload the rim directly between two presser feet with a 17.8 +/- 0.4N force.
4.Record the force necessary to compress the steering wheel rim 3 +/- 0.25mm from the preload point.Loading must start within 5
seconds of preload application.
5.Measurement locations are to be agreed upon by the Ford engineering and supplier representatives.
6.If finger grips are present on the steering wheel rim,then presser feet are to be located over the peak of the finger grip.
7.Steering wheel class "A" wood sections are not required to be measured.
8.The presser foot geometry is shown in Detail 22771
9.Record and retain the softness data for review with the appropriate Ford engineering representative upon request.
