Donald M.Flather (1903 – 1990) was a worldwide known Canadian painter in the 20th Century and he has produced over 400 paintings over his lifetime.
Dr.Flather grew up in Shuswap Lake region and went to Vancouver in his twenties.He graduated from U.B.C with his B.A and M.A.He took teacher training and started his teacher career at Templeton,Britannia and King George High Schools.He was assigned to be Vice Principal at King George.Besides he also organized Vancouver Night School at King Edward Campus for several years.In 1950,Dr.Flather was conferred Ph.D in Education at University of Washington.
Dr.Flather started painting in his schooldays and his paintings were inclusive of Canadian landscapes,plants and animals.He developed his own unique style by combining elements of French Impressionism and the Group of Seven.This probably was in connection with his co-working with Lawren Harris,founder of the Group of Sever,for several years at Federation of Canadian Artists,of which Dr.Flather was an original and founding member.From 1938,Dr.Flather exhibited many times in Vancouver with the B.C.Federation of Artists,of which he was Secretary of in the 40’s and 50’s and displayed paintings at The Art Gallery of Toronto in March 1950.Afterward,he also acted as National Treasurer of The Federation of Canadian Artists.
Dr.Flather was a humble man.Comparing with exhibiting his paintings to the crowds,he preferred to share with friends and family.He was married with a Lady named Grace and had three sons,respectively named Elwood,Barrie and Verne,who all became medical doctors instead of being painter or teacher as their father did.
People can see Dr.Flather’s expansive and deep knowledge of botany,biology and science via his works.To show people the world as he saw through his paintings was one of his greatest wishes.Dr.Flather’s works were shown in totally 12 exhibitions from 1945 to 2008,including Dr.Flather’s Solo show and the exhibitions with participation of other famous artists such as Emily Carr,Lawren Harris,and Mildred Valley Thornton.Nowadays,Dr.Flather’s paintings are widely held in collections throughout Canada,Asia,Indonesia,USA and Britain.
